Demand for marijuana is greater than ice cream

According to a report from Marijuana Business Daily, the total demand for marijuana in the United States (including the black market) is estimated to be $45-50 billion each year. Annual ice cream sales are only $5.1 billion. Total recreational cannabis sales in the U.S. at this estimate would also top movie ticket sales ($11.1 billion) and snacks like Doritos and Cheetos ($4.9 billion) and Girl Scout Cookies ($776 million.)

The report says, “If the federal government legalized marijuana nationwide, sales might start out at around that level but would likely quickly rise as cannabis gained mainstream acceptance and the market evolved.”

Of course, with increased marijuana usage comes an increase in the munchies – so Rocky Road, Thin Mints and Doritos could again see a spike in sales.
